Here are two tasty dishes I made for Thanksgiving:
1. Bananas swaddled in ham with Mornay sauce:
3 bananas
6 slices of ham
butter
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons flour
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan
2 tablespoons grated Gruyere
100 g mushrooms
1 chopped onion
300 ml meat stock
300 ml milk
Salt, pepper, and nutmeg
Bread crumbs, extra parmesan
- Make Mornay sauce. Melt a nice chunk of butter in a pan with some onions, then add mushrooms, flour. Slowly add meat stock without letting it clump up, then add milk. Cook 'til it's thick. Add cheese. Don't let sauce boil once the cheese is added. Finally, add salt, pepper, and some nutmeg.
- Slice bananas in two and wrap each half banana with ham.
- Position them in a buttered pan and cover with Mornay sauce
- Sprinkle cheese and bread crumbs before placing it in oven at 400F for about 20 minutes.
According to the recipe, you should take it out when it "looks as good as it smells."
2. Hutspot met spek; a traditional dutch potato mash.
6 strips bacon
6 medium potatoes
6 carrots
4 onions
Milk
Butter
Salt + Pepper
You should aim to have the same weight in potatoes, carrots and onions.
- Quarter the potatoes, dice onions and carrots
- Boil together for 25 minutes
- Mash together, add milk and butter as desired
- Cut bacon into little bits. Fry it up
- Add bacon to the mash
