The West Coast - IV

It's strange how being far away from home makes me miss it more. I'm only away for two weeks, which isn't any longer than how long I'd be away when at Princeton, but it's tougher.

Blues dancing was a lot of fun, but I realized that I still have a lot of trouble expressing myself in public. I only really dared dance with Kelly or Maiya, and even then I had trouble going full out. It's strange that I'm getting progressively fearless when it comes to routine fears like heights, or bugs, simply by telling myself that it's illogical to let fears disarm me, but that I still can't get past my fear of public expression.

Before blues dancing Pat took us to a really nice sushi place to celebrate her finishing hefty chunk of work. The food was delicious. I really think that there's truth to the statement that food is better here. Apparently, people go out to dinner more often per capita in Portland, Seattle and San Francisco than in any other U.S. city, so it makes sense.

Leaving wasn't easy; we spent an extra day in Portland to make it less stressful for us, but also because it is so nice here. We biked into town to visit Maiya's friends who run a deli with incredibly good sandwiches, Powell's, an amazing and huge bookstore, and a particularly good bubble tea place. Biking across the Broadway Bridge gave beautiful views of the town, which I've really come to love.

When we got home, we watched Fifty Shades of Grey. It was not a great movie, to be honest. It's still a worthwhile cultural phenomenon to experience.

Now we're at Bainbridge Island, near Seattle, where Maiya is going to work. We just met with Seth, who is staying in this house too. He told us all about the island and where's fun to go. Looks like a great place!

We're heading to Seattle tomorrow.
