Lex 63

The 63rd street and Lexington Avenue subway stop is one of my favorite. It gives commuters a free subway transfer, meaning that one can travel to it and back for the price of one subway ride if they keep their journey short enough. Reaching the tracks involves going down deep into the bowels of Manhattan via several escalators, which is certainly an exciting experience given how shallow all the other stations are.
The nicest part of all, however, one discovers on the subway platform itself, away from the escalators. One only needs listen carefully to discover it, and it is the rarest treat of all in the city: complete radio silence. The deep underground shuts out all sounds of city traffic, and even of distant trains. There is no need for loud ventilation, as the air is naturally temperate far below the ground. The result: pure, unadulterated silence. That is, until the F arrives. If only it weren't for those pesky trains! It would be the perfect spot to meditate.
